The keeper of MythsIt was the beginning of the night in San Francisco, and David had decided to enjoy the last evening before the February vacation to frolic in Chinatown during the celebrations of the Chinese New Year. Although he lived in a student room near the university, a passer-by mislead by the darkness could almost take him for a local resident while he stroke the head of a stone dragon or a carved wooden pillar, his dreamy look sweeping over the illuminated avenue. His ancestors, Chinese immigrants at the time of the Far West, had indeed left him a pale complexion, slanted eyes, and stiff jet black hair he liked to wear mid-length, tied in a ponytail. But he had no recollection of his origins, and it was as a tourist, enjoying the colorful spectacle of the festival, that he strolled on the still crowded and busy streets despite the late hour. Step back. Now.
Look around you. Inspect the deserted, run down street. A few months ago, you'd never have ventured in this no-go zone. See the streetlights, they're down. It's the night.
Look down now. This piece of meat lying here, that seem so appetizing, look at it. Think, instead of sniffing it. Who could have dropped it there? A merchant? Don't be stupid. Such feasts don't lie on the ground.
Don't eat. Come closer and sniff. Is there a strange smell? Stop thinking only of eating it, focus dammit!
Yes. There, bitter almond. They would rather see you dead now. Back, leave the meat where it is. Are you still hungry now ? Scan the shadows, is someone watching you? Hide. Be careful, caution is the only thing that keeps you alive. That, and the hunger that digs in your stomach.
Check that the street is deserted. Walk along the wall on your right. Stop, it's too well-lit now. The roof! Climb. Three steps, that's enough. Don't make noise, don't use your claws on the tiles.
